Despite the exciting new designs of jewelry that are being churned out everyday by jewelers, vintage ornaments hold a special place in people’s hearts. Almost everyone has a family heirloom or two tucked away somewhere—beautiful bracelets, antique brooches, quaint necklaces and so on. There are specialty stores that cater to buyers of vintage jewelry exclusively. Even though these pieces are expensively priced, there’s no dearth of people who enjoy collecting these antique beauties.
Antique and vintage jewelry is available for women, men and children and encompasses a wide variety of articles and items, including rings, earrings, bracelets, historical brooches, etc.
Antique brooches are available in a variety of forms—costume brooches, antique pins, antique brooch clips, shawl clips, etc. Usually, an assortment of estate diamonds, classical sapphires, garnets, emeralds, different kinds of pearls and rubies are used in these vintage baubles. Beads and stones have also been used to produce beautiful brooches. Coral brooches were extremely popular in the Victorian Era and are still available as memorable collectibles. Jet-based brooches are not available in huge quantities these days but they were very popular in ancient times. Pinchbeck brooches are popular as the material has the capability to stay intact for a long period of time.
Collected ardently by antique jewelry collectors around the world, antique brooches are popular as they are easily wearable and never go out of fashion. They come in a variety of delicate colours and designs. The most common design used in brooches is that of a butterfly. Brooches look pretty and delicate and can go with any dress, be it a cocktail dress, a gown, a blazer or a sari. Ladies of any culture, country or continent can wear them. They can be worn to dances, parties and weddings. They can also be worn at formal occasions or ceremonial family gatherings.
How does one go about selecting ancient brooches while contemplating a purchase? Never mind if the antique brooch you like bears a few scratches as these can be easily fixed by the jewelry store itself. However, do not pick ones with chips, cracks or missing stones as they are difficult to repair and hence, useless. Discoloured brooches should also be avoided as they too cannot be easily repaired.
