"Languages Empower you" is the title of the events that will take place this week in Nicosia on the occasion of this year’s European Day of Languages.

The events are organised by the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus in cooperation with the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Translation and the European Documentation Centres of the University of Cyprus and the University of Nicosia .

The events will feature exhibition stands from embassies of EU Member States in Cyprus, language and cultural institutes such as Institut Français, Goethe Institut, Istituto Dante Alighieri, Instituto Cervantes and British Council, the Greek Cypriot Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport and Youth, the Foundation for the Management of European Lifelong Learning Programmes, which manages the Erasmus+ programme in Cyprus, and other NGOs promoting language learning.

The first event will take place on Wednesday 25 September at 09:30-13:00 at the Open Amphitheatre of the University of Nicosia. It will include, among others, mini language courses in French, Italian, German and Russian, as well as language competitions and quizzes with interesting prizes. In addition, those attending will have the opportunity to meet University of Nicosia Nicky the Robot, who will "test" the knowledge of participants with specific language-related questions.

The second event will take place on Thursday 26 September at 10:00-15:00 at the outdoor area of the Centre for Social Activities of the University of Cyprus (main campus). This event will also feature mini language courses — in German, English, Italian, Turkish and sign language — along with language games and quizzes. Furthermore, there will be a live link by the radio station of the university Voice 95.2 FM with music from different countries and languages between 11:30 and 13:30.

The European Commission, together with the Council of Europe, celebrates the European Day of Languages every year on 26 September since 2001. The aim is to encourage foreign language learning and highlight their beauty and the ways in which they can have a positive impact on European citizens’ lives, education and careers.
