A large area of forest in the Kantara area was destroyed in a fire on Sunday.Ten dnms of pine, cypress and maki vegetation was turned into ashes. But it could have been much worse said officials expressing that if Sunday was a windy day the toll could have been disastrous.
Fire fighters had difficulty in battling the flames due to the steep terrain but the absence of strong winds made it possible to put out the fire before it spread.
The fire was brought under control in several hours while fire fighters continued to monitor the area overnight.
State and government officials visited the area.
Speaking to State TV Station BRT, Agriculture and Natural Resources Minister Dursun Ouz said that a request had been made for a helicopter from Turkey but that it had been cancelled after the fire was brought under control.
We were lucky, the wind wasnt that strong. It was a close call, he said.
President Aknc also visited the area, inspecting the area destroyed in the fire.
He said that Kantara was one of the most beautiful spots on the Five Finger Mountain range.
It is a beauty we must protect carefully, he said, adding that preserving forests was just as important as planting new trees.
Aknc also congratulated the fire service, the Civil Defence Organisation and local residents for their efforts.
Our forest areas are small and insufficient. I repeat we must protect our forests, he said.
Also visiting the area, Prime Minister Ersin Tatar underlined the importance of taking measures and precautions to protect the countrys forests.
He said that work must start immediately to replant the areas destroyed by the fire.
