Serdar Denktaş steps down as party leader
The veteran leader of the Democrat Party Serdar Denktaş has stepped down from Party leadership at the partys assembly today.
Sources say that Mr Denktaş, who has been leading since its early days, told his fellow party members that he needed to be free to evaluate the Presidential election process and decide to run or not.Speaking live on state TV BRT reminded his commitment not to run for party leadership again in the last party congress three years ago, Mr Denktaş said that next party congress was on the 30th of November and his intention was to make way for his predecessor.
He said that he hadnt decided if he was going to run for Presidency and he was going to use this time until November to decide what to do. Mr Denktaş also said that if he was to run he was going to be an independent candidate.
Political rumours say that the former Minister tourism DP Deputy Fikri Ataoğlu was the favourite in the potential race for DP Party Leadership.
