Military Ammunition depot explodes in Catalkoy
A military ammunition depot has exploded in the Çatalköy, Kyrenia Region in the early hours of Thursday, causing minors injuries and huge fear.
A number of strong explosions heard even from Nicosia caused panic and fear.
The explosions have been reported to be triggered by a minör forest fire that later spread to the military facility.
Houses near the area were immediately evacuated, while the close hotel where around 2000 tourists are staying was brought to high alert as shrapnel pieces landed on the hotel grounds. A smal number of tourists sustained minor injuries and were treated in hospitals in Girne.
President Mustafa Akinci, Prime Minister Ersin Tatar and Foreign Minister Kudret Ozersay were the first officlals to come to the scene where he met with the emergency and security officials.
Speaking to the press President Akinci said that everything that needed to be done in a sitution like this was done and they would evaluated the incident more thouroghly once the day broke.
Mr, Akinci said that there was no need to speculate regarding the cause of the explosions, after he was asked if there was a possibility of sabotage.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that a military personnel had lost his life in the incident, however no official confirmation was given on the situation of the military staff at the ammunition depot.
Experts say that there was no way to intervene with the depot explosions that continued for hours and they had no choice but to wait for all the ammunition to explode and die down itself.
