The restoration of the collapsed section of the Cephane Bastion along Lefkoşa’s historic walls will start next month; it was announced by the President’s Office.

The restoration work will be funded by the EU and the Cultural Heritage Technical Committee.

According to a statement released by the TRNC Presidency, the technical work carried out by the Cultural Heritage Technical Committee in cooperation with the UNDP for the restoration of the Cephane Bastion following its collapse on July 26 has been completed.

The co-chair of the Cultural Heritage Technical Committee Ali Tuncay announced the first phase of the project which was to conduct a technical study of the section of the wall had been completed.

He said that as a second step, the stones were numbered according to their features and places with the aim of restoring the wall to its original form.

Tuncay also announced that the drainage system which was the leading cause of the collapse of the wall had been replaced by a new one.

He said soil and stone analysis were also carried out with the aim of protecting the historical character of the bastions, adding that the topographic survey was carried out using laser scanning on the sensitive surface.

Explaining that preparatory work for the restoration of the collapsed section was completed, Tuncay said, “the restoration project is at tendering stage now.”

According to information provided by Tuncay, following the announcement of the project tender, offers submitted will be evaluated as of September 30.

He said that the approval process will be completed by October 10 which will be followed by the signing of the contract with the firm awarded the tender.
