Parliament lifts immunity of former PM

TRNC Parliaent lifts immunity of former Prime Minister Huseyin Özgürgün with large majority of votes.

Parliamentary immunity of Former Prime Minister and UBP MP Huseyin Ozgurgun was lifted by a large majority of votes in the Assembly's meeting today.

After the hearing of the ad-hoc comittee report in parliament, the proposal to lift  Ozgurgun's immunity, the PArliament moved on to the vote where 42 MP's voted in favour, 2 rejected and 7 MP's werent at the chamber during ther landmark vote.

Mr. Ozgurgun is being accused of obtaining unexplained fund and failing to file an accurate financial disclosure.

Taking the stand before the vote Leader of Ressurection Party Erhan Arikli drew attention on the rise of proposals about immunity particularly after People’s Party had become a part of the parliament since 2018.

Arguing that Kudret Ozersay and his party had came in power by using immunity as a political tool and blamed Ozersay of blackmailing the members of National Unity Party (UBP) to vote in favour of the motion in order to keep the coalition government alive.

Noting on the proceedings on new constitutional amendment package prepared with the collaboration of Democrat Party, Arikli called all MP’s to vote for yes to constitutional amendment package when it will come to the attention of the parliament, since it offers to lift all MP’s immunities.
