The Minister of Tourism and Environment Ünal Ustel announced that ancient Girne harbour will become a center of attention in line with the prepared projects in 2020.

Speaking in a TV program on Tuesday, Minister Ustel has anounced that government was planning to issue invitations for a tender related with refurbishment project of ancient Girne harbour next week.

“The project will be launched by the beginning of December and hopefully a new face of ancient harbour will be ready for new tourism season in 2020. In the scope of the project, we (Ministry) will contact with the shop owners. This project requires the compromise who has a share at the harbour” Ustel said.

Responding the question related with the sewer and lighting systems in the harbour, Minister Ustel declared that the consultations with Municipality of Girne, Ministery of Transportation and Turkish Cypriot Electric Administration (Kib-Tek) have already started and added that new sewer and lighting system will be installed within the scope of the new project.

Touching upon the issue on Ancient Harbour Charter, Minister of Tourism Unal Ustel stated that he was adamant to apply the disappearing charter in his term of office.

“As part of the Ancient Harbour Charter, unpaid fees of the boats, sea vehicles and fish boats will be seized by the goverment and new fees will be determined within the scope of new project” Ustel announced.

Minister Ustel also said that the goverment would reserve a budget to renovate the old maintenance free buldings in the area and issue the bill to the owners as part of the project. Ustel also informed that with the collaboration of Municipality of Girne, Board of Auditors will be formed and several regulations in regards of ancient Girne harbour will be supervised by this board.
