The Minister of Interior Affairs Ayşegül Baybars emphasized the importance of regional cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean that could provide substantial contribution to global security as well as economic revenues if the hydrocarbon resources are used correctly.

Speaking in a conference on security in Istanbul organised by the Turkish Asian Centre for Strategic Studies (TASAM), Baybars said that Cyprus was in an extremely important and strategic location.

Minister Baybars said that the island of Cyprus had started to play a more visible role in light of the latest developments in the Eastern Mediterranean as well as the changing strategic balance.

“The newly discovered hydrocarbon resources have led to the introduction of new parameters in terms of the security, defence and economic balances. It has changed the cards on the table,” she said.

Democrat Party MP Baybars added that the Turkish Cypriot side and Turkey were voicing at all platform that these resources belonged to both peoples on the island.

“We shall continue to voice this view,” Baybars stated.

Pointing out that the discovery, exploitation and marketing of hydrocarbon resources have become a source of conflict for some countries while beneficial for others, the Minister of Interior said that the Turkish Cypriot side had opted for cooperation.

“Cooperation in the conflicted Eastern Mediterranean region will not create to new instabilities but would reinstate it. This is why the Turkish Cypriot side has been submitting proposals to the Greek Cypriot side since 2011 to co-manage the island’s hydrocarbon resources. Unfortunately, our latest proposal made in July, as with similar proposals made in the past, was rejected by the Greek Cypriot side on grounds of so-called sovereignty,” she said.

Baybars pointed out that the Greek Cypriot leadership with its maximalist approach regarding these resources has been continuing its unilateral activities, thus opting to raise tensions.
