The General Secretary of New Cyprus Party (YKP) Murat Kanatli declared a support to Turkish Cypriot Teachers’ Union (KTOS) that subjected several criticisms over the usage of the term “occupation”.
In his written statement published on Thursday, General Secretary Kanatli expressed that some circles aimed to change the agenda over the usage of the term “occupation” and emphasized the usage of term in Cyprus was not a new discussion.
Noting that the freedom of thought and expression confirmed as a part of Constitution as well as took part in several international documents and agreements, Mr. Kanatli argued that the owners of the request asking the prohibition of the term know very well that Constitutional court would reject the case at the first session.
“New Cyprus Party would like underline that no one could scare us with empty threats. The discussion over the freedom of thought and expression is related with European Court of Human Rights. If the domestic legal order remained insufficient to act in accordance of universal laws then the case will come to the agenda of European Court of Human Rights.” Kanatli stated.
General Secretary of YKP Murat Kanatli also argued that the request of nationalist parties to ban the usage of the term largely conflicted with the arguments of right wing parties since TRNC constitution confirms free expression in Turkish Cypriot community.
Kanatli also argued in his statement that some paramilitary groups have been harrasing Turkish Cypriot Teachers’ Union for some time due to their usage of the word “occupation” and issued a request of solidarity to support KTOS over the freedom of expression.
