Officials inaugurate sculpture of Democracy in Lefkoşa

The sculpture of Democracy created by a sculptor Zehra Sonya and her team inaugurated on Saturday with the participation of politicians and officials at the square on Mustafa Ruso Avenue in Lefkoşa.

The sculpture of Democracy created by a sculptor Zehra Sonya and her team inaugurated on Saturday with the participation of politicians and officials at the square on Mustafa Ruso Avenue in Lefkoşa.

In an opening speech the sculptor Zehra Sonya mentioned that the construction process of 4 meter tall sculpture took 2 years and the piece finalized after the intense efforts her team and Municipality of Lefkoşa.

Referring to the difficulties to work on a sculpture under the title of democracy that holds heavy meanings, Sonya said “Working on a democracy sculpture in a place where the ideals of democracy were quite low initially scared me”.

Sonya also emphasized that it was a well-known fact that how the lack of democracy has been transforming the lives of the people in dramatic degrees in N. Cyprus. Expressing her thanks to her team and the Mayor of Lefkoşa Mehmet Harmanci for their supports, Sonya also drew attention the necessity to expand the notion of democracy in the circles of art in Cyprus.
