Turkish Cypriots living in abroad should be eligible to vote: Coordinator Kasapoglu

General Coordinator of Solidarity Platform of Turkish Cypriots Living in Abroad Osman Kasapoglu emphasized the platform’s request to obtain a right to elect and be elected for Turkish Cypriots who living in abroad in an interview conducted by Kibris Postasi.

General Coordinator of Solidarity Platform of Turkish Cypriots Living in Abroad Osman Kasapoglu emphasized the platform’s request to obtain a right to elect and be elected for Turkish Cypriots who living in abroad in an interview conducted by Kibris Postasi.

Responding the questions of reporter Rahmican Çalışkan, General Coordinator Kasapoglu said despite the delivered promises of the each government represntatives, there is no actual progression for Turkish Cypriots living in abroad on the right to elect and be elected in N. Cyprus.

Touching upon the previous perception of the officials that the votes from another countries would damage Turkish Cypriot authority, Kasapoglu stressed that “Solidarity Platform of Turkish Cypriots Living in Abroad aimed at to overcome this prejudice”.  

Pointing out that the platform formed with the initiative of Vedat Çelik who served as a Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1975, Kasapoglu reminded that the activities after him gradually came to a stopping point.

Emphasizing on the necessity for Turkish Cypriots living in abroad to be eligible to vote in N. Cyprus, General Coordinator of Solidarity Platform of Turkish Cypriots Living in Abroad Kasapoglu said “Estonia has started to materialize the elections online, Turkish Cypriots living in abroad should be able to vote online as well”.

Kasapoglu also added that the research conducted by the platform revealed that around 650.000 Turkish Cypriots living in abroad.

“This estimated number extracted from the data of United Kingdom Ministry of Internal Affairs, Turkish Cypriot associations' surveys in Turkey, the data of Australian Ministry of Internal Affairs and other Turkish Cypriot associations and federations established by Turkish Cypriots in abroad” Kasapoglu stated.

Touching upon the Turkish Cypriot constitution that prevents Turkish Cypriots living in abroad from the right to vote, Kasapoglu underlined the requirement for urgent constitutional amendments that would terminate the ban for representation of abroad Turkish Cypriots in Turkish Cypriot parliament. He also issued a call for officials to consider a revision in 1976 Election and Referendum Law.
