President Mustafa Akıncı has said that science diplomacy was most needed in the Eastern Mediterranean.

“Either diplomacy based on tensions, as pursued by our Greek Cypriot neighbours will continue, or the right steps based on established facts will be taken,” he added.

Akıncı was speaking at the opening session of the International Science Diplomacy Forum taking place at the YÖDAK (Higher Education Planning, Evaluation, Accreditation and Coordination Council) conference hall.

Highlighting the importance of the forum for the Turkish Cypriot people, Akıncı said that the Turkish Cypriot people needed to use the instruments of culture, art and science, all of which recognized no boundaries, in their endevour to overcome restrictions and boundaries imposed on them.

He reminded that the world did not recognize the Office of the TRNC President but did recognise the TRNC Presidency’s Symphony Orchestra.

Touching upon developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, Akıncı said that this was the area where science diplomacy was needed the most.

He underlined the importance of making the right decisions on the basis of scientific facts.

“The EastMed project is a good example of this. The project is absent of scientific realities and rationale,” he said.
