National Unity Party MP Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu said the Maraş move was developed against the rejectionist attitude of the Greek Cypriot side. Speaking on the fenced-off city of Maraş during discussions in parliament yesterday, he said that the move would comply with both the European Court of Human Rights and International law.

“Maraş is a part of the territory of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. It is under the control of the Turkish Cypriots. The first step that needs to be taken in this area is to end its status as a military restricted zone so that property can be reinstated,” said Hasipoğlu.

Referring to the Immovable Property Commission (IPC), Hasipoğlu argued that all problems could be solved if an amicable agreement is signed.

He added that these steps would be in line with international law.

Hasipoğlu also said that there was no need to wait for the Greek Cypriot side anymore and added that steps were needed to be taken for the benefit of the Turkish Cypriot people.
