President Mustafa Akıncı said that those who endured pain and suffering on this island in the past should be able to share its benefits in an equitable fashion.

“Failure to do so will result in the great powers splitting these benefits and its inhabitants suffering the consequences,” he added.

Akıncı was speaking during an event in Değirmenlik.

The President said that the country was at an important junction and that “the opportunity for a solution will knock on our doors once again following the elections.”

He also argued that the most realistic option for a solution which the international community supported was a federal settlement on the basis of two equal constituent states.

Stating that this was also Turkey’s official position, Akıncı added that the alternative to a federal settlement was the reinforcement of the island’s partition.
