A bi-communal pro-peace movement UniteCyprusNow (UCN) called UN Secretary General to hold the Cypriot leaders to account on the Security Council’s expectation that they prepare the communities for a settlement.

Noting that putting an end to discussions on UN parameters and past agreements in Berlin talks does not mean that Cyprus talks are about to resume, UCN drew attention to the undetermined time of an five party conference with the participation of guarantor countries.

“This gives enough time for the guardians of the status-quo and/or the promoters of partition to throw the process off track again.” UCN argued in their public statement.

Highlighting that the ground should be ready for successful negotiations, UCN issued a call to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres “to hold the leaders to account on the Security Council’s expectation that they prepare the communities for a settlement “through public messages on convergences and the way ahead, and delivering more constructive and harmonised messages; and by refraining from actions or rhetoric that detracts from a successful process.”

“We also expect the Secretary-General and the Security Council to reaffirm the importance of “the full and effective participation of civil society and women in particular at all stages of the peace process”.” UCN emphasized.

Referring to the official remarks of UN Secretary General Guterres that “this time will be different” delivered after Berlin talks, UCN underlined that the sides should prove that they indeed mean it when they want to achieve a settlement in Cyprus.
