The Spokesman for Turkey’s Justice and Development Party (AKP) Ömer Çelik has stressed that Turkey will continue with its exploration activities in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Çelik also touched upon the latest developments in the Eastern Mediterranean during a press conference.
Noting that some countries continued to adopt a negative stance towards Turkey’s determined position to protect its rights and interests in the Eastern Mediterranean, he said this was inconsistent with the values of the European Union.
Referring to French President Emmanuel Macron’s statement in support of the Greek Cypriot administration and Greece, Çelik said these statements were only made to show solidarity.
“These statements neither correspond with the realities on the ground nor are they in line with international law,” he added.
Stressing that Turkey will continue its exploration activities in the region, he said “these activities will continue with the aim of protecting the rights and interests of Turkey as well as those of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.”
Recalling that the Greek Cypriot administration had rejected a proposal made by the TRNC authorities on July 13 for the establishment of a joint committee on the issue of hydrocarbons, Çelik said the Greek Cypriot administration was not hesitating to take steps aimed at harming the rights and interests of the TRNC while arguing at the same time that the system of guarantees was outdated.
“If they really think of sharing the island’s natural resources and if they have the intention to use these resources for the whole island than the first thing they need to do is to give a positive response to the TRNC’s proposal for a joint committee,” Çelik said.
